Maternal Medical Debt Relief and reform
In 2026 we launched a Maternal Medical Debt Relief Initiative.
Across West Africa, postpartum mothers are often detained in hospitals due to unpaid delivery fees, a violation of basic human rights and dignity.
Through this collaborative project, we aim to end the detention of postpartum mothers for medical debt through sustainable systems change — not temporary charity.
IMMEDIATE RELIEF
Secure the release of mothers and newborns currently detained due to unpaid delivery or neonatal care fees and support enrollment into applicable health insurance or social protection schemes.
SYSTEMS REFORM
Partner with hospitals to implement transparent pricing, antenatal financial counseling, pre-delivery coverage enrollment, and standardized discharge protocols.
POLICY & LEGAL REFORM
Advance national policies and legal protections that explicitly prohibit maternal and neonatal detention and strengthen public financing for maternal and newborn care.
NORM CHANGE
Make maternal and neonatal detention socially, politically, and institutionally unacceptable through coordinated advocacy and public accountability.
